How we engage
Respect council’s authority
Bring clear recommendations and respect council’s role in deciding what’s right for its community. Hear out people who see the issue differently.
Use verifiable information
Check your facts, cite sources people can consult, and be clear about what’s still unknown. Use plain language and stay focused on the local issue.
Communicate with respect
Speak the truth in love. Be honest, direct, and kind in meetings, in writing, and online. Stay composed when people disagree.
Before, during, and after a council meeting
Before the meeting
- Check the municipality’s rules for registering to speak, submitting materials, and attending. Check any rules on signs and audience conduct.
- Submit your materials by the deadline and prepare one clear request for council.
During the meeting
- Follow the chair’s directions and stay within your allotted speaking time.
- Explain your request plainly, refer to the materials you submitted, and be ready for questions.
- Give others the same courtesy you expect while speaking.
After the meeting
- Thank council and staff for their time and send any information you promised.
- Check the minutes or follow up with the clerk to confirm what council decided and what happens next.
Representing KICLEI
When you speak or act on behalf of KICLEI Canada, this code applies in council meetings, in correspondence, at public events, and online.
KICLEI may withdraw its recognition of anyone who seriously or repeatedly breaches this code while representing the initiative.
